Brutal Hymn | David Williford | Ziona Riley

Brutal Hymn is the musical collective of saxophonist Jayve Montgomery, bassist Randy Hunt, and percussionist John Westberry.  Based in Nashville TN, the trio debuted at Sun Dog studios in 2019 as part of Chris Davis' FRML series, delivering a blistering improvised performance.  Montgomery, Hunt and Westberry strive to create an unrestrained musical journey with Brutal Hymn: an ongoing negotiation of dynamics, harmony and rhythm.   Check out www.instagram.com/brutal_hymn for show announcements and music releases.

Raised primarily on classical and hymnal music, Ziona Riley is a skilled weaver of harmony and dissonance in the folk/ singer-songwriter traditions exemplified by artists like Connie Converse, Sibylle Baier, or Judee Sill. Creative fingerstyle guitar work and evocative musicality underlie carefully constructed lyrical portraits as meaningful as they are mysterious. The Nashville Scene highlighted Riley's 2019 release, "Not Too Precious," calling it one of the best local EPs of the year and describing it as a "collection of deeply

thoughtful, impactful songs about family and contemporary society." Riley is currently recording her first full length album with longtime collaborator, cellist Austin Hoke. She performs regularly in Nashville, Knoxville, and Atlanta. Show announcements can be found on Bandcamp, Songkick, or Instagram.
